Interview Summary

Q: Tell me about you. Who are you and what do you do?

A: My name is Christian Borchert. I am a father of two, who inspired my wife and I to open a business and call it Evening Huddle, a play on our kids’ names. By day, I am a channel sales manager with a large healthcare data company and by night a creator with My Sound Delve, a ttrpg and wargaming mobile app.

Q: What’s your experience with DND?

A: I came across DND in middle school but lacked a gaming group until high school in the late 80’s. Most of my play was at Boy Scout campouts. I had GMed a little bit in college but took a hiatus until I settled into my career and a colleague started a gaming group. That was in 2003 and I’ve played somewhat regularly since then. I say somewhat because I am lucky if I play 6 sessions each year.

Q: Do you have any Memorable DND Stories?

The colleague who brought DND back into my life is a very slow GM. In fact, it took us 10 years to complete the City of the Spider Queen module! That speed inspired me to think of ways to make play faster, yet not losing the core elements that make the game fun. I started GMing myself and crafting terrain to improve the immersion experience.

In 2014, to celebrate DND’s 40th anniversary, I led a group through Ruins of Castle Greyhawk where our traveled through a portal from Faerun to Greyhawk, which actually severed a cleric’s connection with her goddess and we had to replace her. That led to the hiring of a local cleric and paladin, which worked for both the story and new players who came to the table. For a GM, it allowed me to force a tithing onto the party, which was great because I took full advantage of the Magic Item Compendium. The party knew that they had to give 20% of their plunder to the churches, but they could cherry pick the best magic. It worked very well.

Q: How have games like DND affected your life?

DND has improved my leadership and sales skills. I’ve developed a very collaborative approach toward advancing an initiative, empowering colleagues or advancing a sale by bringing leveraging resources and assets that solve the problem.

Q: What do you do to create immersion & engagement at the table?

A: From 2003, I started collecting WOTC miniatures. Currently, my collection is over 2,500. I also started crafting terrain to accompany our settings. Initially, I started with 3D structures with casted plaster using Hirst Arts molds. While they are awesome, I found them limiting and coming across DM Scotty’s YouTube channel was life changing. He focuses on making terrain that is very playable and modular. I’ve combined his use of cardboard and foam core with Hirst Arts to provide terrain for our sessions. Combined with the figurines, my players show up with a heightened expectation.

Q: How do you use sounds and music to affect the experience at the table?

A: Playing soundtracks from movies like Lord of the Rings or streaming music like Midnight Syndicate was our initial approach toward increasing the immersion experience. In 2011, I started drafting ideas for a mobile app that could offer an intuitive and interactive way to add to the aural experience. I downloaded some but found them limiting. That’s the inception of My Sound Delve, because I couldn’t find an app that followed the game play with variable results based on dice rolling. So, I started building one focusing on just the sound effects- not ambience. There’s enough options there already.

Q: What’s your current sound recording setup?

A: I use Audacity as my sound recording software. It is fairly intuitive and offers me enough options for the work I do. Because we want our app to function without the need for wifi or data usage, we’ve opted to convert our files from .wav to .mp3s. While there is some sacrifice in quality, we believe it is a better approach overall.

For sound effects, I have licenses with Artlist.io as well as Boom Library. Our first stop once I had my concept half-baked was with a copyright attorney. He’s been very supportive of our project and helped me through the maze of licensing.

Q: Tell me about your Creative Process

I’ve found that I need to strike a balance between being specific with sounds but also generic enough to satisfy a wide audience. Early on in my concept, I decided that it would be best to include our users too, which is why we built in a personal recording option as well as the feature to upload unlimited personal sounds.

As for my creative expression, I started with the idea of a character party. I wanted character voices for fighter types, magic users, healers, good and evil in both male and female personalities to offer the most flexibility to a gaming group. I contracted with the Voice Sphere, a group of voice actors to record the scripts I wrote and gave them instruction for how I thought the character would convey the script. These were for Phrases, Spell Actions (the verbal components for spells) as well as Emotes that I could use for Weapon Actions and Weapon Hits.

About three years ago, I started creating a dictionary for three magical languages I call Delvin. I loosely based these languages on the places I’ve lived in my life- Maori, the native tongue to the inhabitants of New Zealand as I was an exchange student there in high school; Ancient Greek as I lived there for a semester in college and took Biblical Greek as part of my Religious Studies degree and Japanese because I worked there teaching English for three years after graduating college. A great example is the word, “me” in Japanese is watashiwa and in Arcane Delvin, it is mitashi.

The sounds in our app are like a puzzle that can be mixed and matched and are categorized as Action, Hit, Miss, Critical, Fumble, Phrases and Foley. If a user wants to use the auto-dice rolling feature, they can create a scenario with an action sound and the die roll will determine whether a hit, miss, critical hit or fumble sound is played. All the sounds are assigned by the user. Like a good GM, I never wanted to give our users just one path to express their character’s actions.

Q: Do you have a favorite sound?

A: Originally, I thought the spells were going to be my favorite. Our Entangle spell is pretty awesome- you can hear the vines whipping around. Let me play it with the spell casting for the full effect…

But now, I am torn between the amazing voice talent used for our Phrases like Gods Damn It and the flexibility of our Foley sounds like the Fire Trap.

Q: Tell me about My Sound Delve

Since I play so infrequent, I wanted a tool that would enhance our play audibly and while there are some options out there, none follow the game flow of an action with a corresponding result.

We built that.

Most tools are built for the GM as we have so much to do in game, I wanted to make our app for everyone at the table.

Our goal was to start with over 1,000 sounds in our library. We did that. We plan to introduce new sounds every month and in December we added about 150 Fantasy sounds. I am on target to release another 150 January 1st with a Monster theme. We’ll do another Monster theme in February then focus on Wargaming for a couple months before we tackle Science Fiction and toward the latter part of 2021, we’ll add Villains and Magic Items.

The free version contains 68 sounds now, but with each new release, we’ll add to that number too. I want folks to get the feel for it and take advantage of the free 3-day trial for Premium. Premium offers the sound recording, custom wallpaper options and unlimited personal uploads. Premium runs $3.99, which is equivalent to Patreon support. Since I hate ads, I have opted to include no adds in our free version, and I hope to keep it that way.

Q: How can players & GMs customize their experience through your app?

They can take advantage of the recording and personal uploads for sure, but the mix and match capabilities make the app very unique to each user. I’ve used Phrases as Action sounds- and we’ve included some great battlecries in the Phrase gallery to do just that. I’ve uploaded snips from songs for a character I have that encourages players. It really elevates the table experience.

Q: How would a player/GM set up & customize their app for their next session?

I love this question because if you are someone who just wants to use the sounds, you can simply press the play button from any sound in the galleries. However, the auto-damage feature is a great because it adds the math results immediately so there’s no counting. One of my players told me I took math off the table.

Advanced users take full advantage of the personal upload features. Rather than read the script at the table, the script can be pre-recorded and placed within the main screen to access when the time is right. The user can play some ambient sound and add some fun cadence to their voice. This works well for folks who are a bit shy in front of others, but can belt out some creative work in private.

Q: Any good books you recommend?

A: I am going to show my age here with my Dragonlance recommendation. It is such an amazing series and very inspirational to me. I was sad that Wizards and Tracy Hickman and Margaret Wiess are in contract disputes.

Q: If you could write a quote of advice in everyone’s Character Sheet to help them out, what would you put?

A: Well, being into sound, I would write some signature phrases for my character. Using the app, I’d record them and use them during game play. We are playing heroes and villains after all- they are a step above the fray and unique. They should be approached as such.

Q: What tools or resources do you recommend?

A: I can’t recommend using game terrain and miniatures enough. They are such enhancements that it is disappointing to me when I can’t like this summer at Boy Scout camp with my son. Sure- we had miniatures, but not the terrain and it felt lacking.

Q: Where can people find you and connect?

We are the only My Sound Delve out there in the social media space. Today we are only iOS App Store, but are on target to release our Android version in early January 2021. Check us out. We’re free and without ads!
